A Christmas Guide to Hexham

Posted 02 December 2016

We didn’t choose Hexham as the base for one of our developments for nothing, and it is not just the town’s rural location, high quality schools and shops, and excellent transport links that keep buyers at Hexham Gate enjoying a great and exciting lifestyle. Whilst there is plenty to see and to do all year round, come winter Hexham comes alive with a range of events all of which are designed to fill you with festive cheer.

If you are considering a visit to Hexham or are planning a move to enjoy its charm, character and culture every day of the year, our guide to Christmas at Hexham ensures you know exactly what’s on the itinerary for December 2016.

Designer Makers’ Market

Saturday 3rd December - 10.00am until 4.00pm

Want to fill the stockings of your loved ones with handcrafted goods that are one of a kind? Then Hexham’s Designer Makers’ Market is the perfect place to start your Christmas shop. Taking place at the town’s iconic Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, the market promises stalls from the region’s most talented craftspeople all of which are showcasing their original and contemporary work. It’s the second year that the Designer Makers’ Market has come to Hexham and this event is set to be bigger and better than last year, and it’s still free entry!

Light up a Life

Saturday 3rd December - 4.00pm

From the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre to Hexham Abbey just across the road, the Light up a Life event is a beautiful tribute to the extra special people in our lives that can’t be here to celebrate Christmas with us. The event is run by Tynedale Hospice and invites guests to make a donation in their loved one’s memory. Regardless of how big or small your donation is, you will be given a card with your loved one’s name inside and a memory star, which you can use to write your own special message on. Your memory star can then either be taken home with you to hang on your Christmas tree or brought to a special Light up a Life service at Hexham Abbey.

Festive Meeting

Wednesday 7th December - First Race: 12.45pm

Hexham Races is a great day out at any time of the year, but their Festive Meeting is another way to celebrate Christmas and this magnificent racecourse, a course that has been the home of Northumberland’s National Hunt for more than 100 years. With the same warm, friendly welcome and stunning viewing areas, Hexham Races’ Festive Meeting can be enjoyed courtesy of several, limited Christmas packages where you can enjoy a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings in the Henderson Suite before placing your bets in an afternoon of racing.

Christmas Market Weekend Extravaganza

Friday 9th to Sunday 11th December – Times vary

A great event for all the family, Hexham Christmas Market comes to town for another year for one weekend only with its extensive selection of market stalls, fairground rides, children’s activities (including face painting) and its renowned grotto with Santa and his reindeers all great features. The Christmas Market Weekend Extravaganza also sees shops throughout Hexham extend their opening hours for some late night shopping, whilst the weekend long event, which includes Hexham’s celebrated Christmas Tree Festival, comes to an end with Carols in the Park at 4pm.

The Albion Christmas Band

Saturday 10th December - 7.30pm

In addition to being home to December’s run of The Jungle Book, Queen’s Hall Arts Centre welcomes critically acclaimed The Albion Christmas Band into its Main Theatre for an evening of seasonal song, dance, carols, comedy and readings.
