Everything you need to know for the perfect spring clean
Posted 15 March 2017
It’s that time of year again where we all want to give our homes a good sorting out. We take a look at some of the easy ways you can up the ante with this year's spring clean.
For many of us, the arrival of spring means it’s time to give our homes a really good clean. Over Christmas and the winter period, we tend to curl ourselves up indoors as much as possible and hoard things as consequence.
In the UK, 73% of people say they spring clean their homes every year, showing that this top-to-bottom house cleanse is still an annual milestone for most of us.
With a bit of time and effort, you can leave your home looking clean, fresh and decluttered.
Make a thorough checklist
A checklist is the most important tool at your disposal for keeping your spring clean on track and on time. The more detailed the checklist, the better. Before you start actually cleaning, do a walking tour of your house and write down every single job that needs doing. Once you’ve done this, group these jobs together by room and give yourself a designated amount of time for each room in your house. This will give you a clearer idea of just how much work you’re dealing with.
Get the worst jobs over with
There are bound to be some jobs in your spring clean that you’re dreading more than others. These tend to be things like wiping down the bathroom surfaces, cleaning the kitchen, cleaning the inside of the oven or wiping down the fridge. If you have a particularly cluttered cupboard, maybe the thought of going through it fills you with dread. Whatever your most feared tasks may be, get them out the way first. This will give you an early sense of achievement to help spur you on to complete the less time-consuming jobs on your agenda.
Don’t get distracted
We’ve all been guilty of it – saying we’re going to get on with cleaning and actually spending most of our time reminiscing over old junk we haven’t looked at for years. But Memory Lane doesn’t lead to a tidy house. Be brutal with your timekeeping and with the things you’re willing to throw away. If you haven’t used/worn/looked at it in six months, are you ever going to?
Open your windows and let fresh air in
When cleaning, it’s important to air out your home by opening the windows. In a study carried out by mental health charity Mind, 94% of participants said that incorporating nature and fresh air into their lives improved their mental health, and this can be applied to your spring clean too.
Opening your windows gives the feeling of freshness, clears your head, increases positivity and lets you enjoy the post-winter air (and maybe even a little sunshine).
Take pride and reward yourself
We make the effort to spring clean because we know it’s important to take pride in our homes. After all, it’s where we spend most of our time. Reward yourself for a cleaning job well done by filling your house with fresh flowers to really make the most of spring.
