First Residents Move Into Hexham Gate

Posted 23 May 2017

The first residents have now moved into Hexham Gate - the North East’s largest development of low-energy homes

In recent months, the construction of our unique energy efficient homes at Hexham Gate has been progressing at a pace. And now, as the first homes reach completion, the first residents at this much-anticipated site are beginning to move in.

With 10 of the 16 properties at Hexham Gate sold off-plan in just 12 months, it won’t be long before the development becomes a thriving community on the outskirts of Hexham and Corbridge. We caught up with the first of the residents to collect the keys to their home, Caroline Watkins, and asked her about how she was looking forward to a new life in her four-bedroom Tavelan.

Caroline relocated 300 miles from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire to move into her Trivselhus by Esh home. She says:

“My daughter lives in Northumberland and my son in London so when I started to develop some problems with my eyesight, I felt it was a good opportunity to move closer to one of my children in case I needed some help and support. I have always loved Northumberland. Hexham in particular has always been a favourite place of mine to visit so when I saw the homes being built at Hexham Gate, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to enjoy the benefits of living in a more energy conscious home whilst also living so much closer to my daughter.

“I have always wanted to live in an ‘eco house’. My home in High Wycombe was an older property and so quite cold and difficult to heat – it couldn’t be further from where I am now. The property maintains a lovely temperature thanks to the energy conscious design. It is of course a particular blessing in the winter as Northumberland is quite cold!

“I was aware that my situation meant I was moving onto a building site as the homes are still under construction but Trivselhus by Esh have really bent over backwards to accommodate me and because of the triple-glazing it barely registers that there is construction work going on as the noise is minimal.  My home overlooks trees and woodland to the rear so the position could not be more perfect for me really.”

This year, Hexham gate was shortlisted for a RICS North East Renaissance Award, recognising the region’s most outstanding developments in both the Residential and Design Through Innovation categories. There are three remaining house types for sale at Hexham Gate, starting from £530,000.  Every Trivselhus by Esh Home incorporates market leading design and construction techniques to create ‘A’ rated contemporary homes in terms of Energy Performance.

Caroline continues:

“One of the main attractions for me with a Trivselhus by Esh home was the light.  The open plan design and positioning of the windows means the light in every room is just wonderful – so bright and fresh and very ‘Scandiwegian’ as I call it!  Of course with the issues I’ve experienced with my eyesight the light which floods my home is especially important.  Balanced with the added benefits of all the energy saving features means this is a home which is a joy to live in.”

Trivselhus by Esh homes feature an innovative fabric first manufacturing approach to construction to ensure that energy saving potential is built into the walls of every property with high levels of insulation, an airtight membrane and triple glazed windows throughout.  Solar roof panels capture the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells which are not reliant on direct sunlight, enabling them to generate electricity on cloudy days to run household appliances and lighting.

Homes are heated via an air source heat pump system which transfers heat from the outside air into the building in the form of hot water in under-floor heating on the ground level and modern radiators on the upper floor. The efficiently heated water is housed in large capacity cylinder stores for use in washing and throughout in the home.  Warm, moist air is continuously extracted from rooms such as the kitchen and bathrooms through a concealed duct system, passed through a heat exchanger and ducted outside with fresh air then drawn in and warmed before being circulated to the living room and bedrooms.
